Price Comparison between Valtrex, Generic Valtrex, and Acyclovir in United States

For those who are unaware, there is a generic form of Valtrex (Valacyclovir Hydrochloride) available in the United States.

Having just spoken to both CVS Pharmacy and Rite Aid Pharmacy on the phone, here is the price comparisons that I discovered.

CVS Valtrex and Generic Valtrex Prices

90 Pills 500mg
  • Generic Valtrex – $585
  • Valtrex (Brand Name) – $764
90 Pills 1000mg
  • Generic Valtrex – $1,005
  • Valtrex (Brand Name) – $1275

Rite Aid Valtrex and Generic Valtrex Prices

90 Pills 500mg
  • Generic Valtrex – $615
  • Valtrex (Brand Name) – $780
90 Pills 1000mg
  • Generic Valtrex – $1,080
  • Valtrex (Brand Name) – $1368

Acyclovir is MUCH CHEAPER!

Keep in mind that you can get Zovirax or generic Zovirax (Acyclovir) for MUCH, MUCH less. It seems very few places even carry the brand name Zovirax anymore because the generic is so widely available, and so CHEAP! (More than 15 different companies have been approved by the FDA for generic Acyclovir. Competition brings the price down!)

800mg Acyclovir = 500mg Valtrex

(Standard dose seems to be 400mg Acyclovir twice a day instead of 800mg all at once. In reality, it seems the largest benefit of Valtrex over Acyclovir is that you only have to take Valtrex once a day as compared to twice…) (Note: This is not medical advice, just opinion, so ask your doctor.)

Here are some prices I found on Generic Acyclovir:

90 Pills 800mg (800mg Acyclovir = 500mg Valtrex)
  • Generic Acyclovir – $56 (Drugstore.com)

Over the phone from CVS:

90 Pills 800mg (800mg Acyclovir = 500mg Valtrex)
  • Generic Acyclovir – $140
